From November 2025, the European Union will launch the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), meaning that Canadian citizens will now need to apply for a pre-issued digital permit before visiting Europe.

On December 12, 2022, the European Parliament voted to lift all the travel restrictions for visitors traveling to Europe outside the Schengen Zone.
This means that after almost three Pandemic-driven years, Canadian citizens no longer need proof of vaccination or an EU Digital Certificate upon arrival to the EU.

Do CA citizens need ETIAS?
Due to an agreement between Europe and Canada, European citizens do not need a visa to travel to Canada for a short period of 180 days. However, all visa-free citizens planning to visit Canada for less than six months must pre-register with the eTA, the Canadian version of ESTA, or the ETIAS visa waiver. For Europe, ETIAS is similar to the eTA, which will enhance traveler pre-screening and enhance the country’s security. From 2025, Canadian citizens will be required to register with ETIAS to travel to Europe.
When will ETIAS come into force?
From 2025, an ETIAS visa waiver will become mandatory for those wishing to travel to Europe. If your country is eligible for ETIAS, you will have to register and admit your data in the application. It takes no more than 10 minutes to fill out the form.
After the ETIAS is Launched, The transition period will last for half a year until the system is fully operational.
Is it possible for Canadians to work in Europe with ETIAS?
Unfortunately, ETIAS does not equate to a work visa. It will not allow Canadians to work for a company based in a European country. To work in a European country, Canadian citizens must obtain the appropriate permit or national visa for their work. A Visa waiver enables foreign visitors to travel for only tourism, business, or transit purposes.
