ETIAS Canada Visa Waiver for Canadian Citizens
Get ready for the European journey with ETIAS Canada
What is ETIAS visa waiver?
What is ETIAS Canada?
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is the European Union’s new framework for European travel. ETIAS aims at enhancing the Union’s security capabilities without compromising the smooth traveling experience.
Set to be launched in late 2025, ETIAS will enable Canadian citizens to visit the EU/Schengen Area countries (except Ireland) for up to 90 days with just a pre-issued digital travel permit, valid for 3 years.
ETIAS visa waiver can only be used for leisure or business purposes (short-term travel). Visiting the Schengen zone for any other purpose or for a period longer than 90 days requires applying for Schengen visa.

ETIAS Requirements for Canadian Citizens
ETIAS Requirements for CA citizens
Applying for an ETIAS authorization is a simple procedure, taking less than 15 minutes. These are the ETIAS requirements for Canadian and other visa-exempt nationals:
- Valid Canadian biometric passport.
- Completed ETIAS application form.
- Valid email address to receive updates and feedback.
The 95% of all international passports are biometric, so Canadian citizens do not have to worry about their travel documents. The validity of a passport means that there should be at least 6 months left before the expiry of the passport. If your passport is expiring within 6 months after your intended arrival to EU, you must renew your passport.
Please note that ETIAS Canada authorization cannot be transferred between two travel documents. If a Canadian citizen changes their passport, they must re-apply for a new ETIAS visa waiver, even if the old one isn’t expired.
It’s recommended to apply for ETIAS authorization 72 hours before your flight to the EU/Schengen Area.
Who Will Need ETIAS to Travel to Europe?
From 2025, the citizens of 59 countries worldwide having visa-free access to European countries will be eligible for ETIAS Canada.
Once you complete the application process, you’ll receive a digital travel permit, enabling you to visit the EU / Schengen Area countries for up to three months every 180 days for 3 years.
As a Canadian citizen, you can immediately jump ahead of others by subscribing to the ETIAS Newsletter.

Travel changes with ETIAS visa waiver
European Commission aimed at making traveling to Europe easier than ever. ETIAS Canada serves this purpose. The electronic travel system will do majority of screening that is otherwise done by border guards currently. The process of checking travelers’ passports, the reasons for their visit and legitimacy of their documents will take much less time.
ETIAS visa waiver will allow visiting Schengen Area in an easy and safe way. ETIAS helps you prepare for the trip, to check the expiry of your passport and to see if there are any issues with your candidate (in case you get rejected).
It is much better to receive ETIAS refusal before you travel than when you’re actually at the airport arrived in your destination country. These are the 5 steps to visiting Schengen Area with ETIAS Canada:
- Check the validity of your passport
- Fill in the ETIAS online application
- Pay the ETIAS fee
- Submit the application
- Receive the feedback within 72 hours on your email

No. You can only apply for ETIAS authorization once it’s launched in 2025. But it will not be mandatory immediately. ETIAS Canada will allow 6-month transition period during which applying for the travel authorization will be optional. Only after the transition period is over ETIAS waiver will become a mandatory step for every visa-exempt traveler.
